Fellowship Requirements
The Duke-UNC Rotary Center for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution is one of six in the world funded by Rotary International. Up to ten Rotary World Peace Fellows join the Center each fall, up to five at Duke's program in international development policy, and up to five in UNC master's programs under various relevant departments. World Peace Fellows will follow an interdisciplinary program consisting of
(i) their primary field of studies in such areas as international development policy, international education, political science etc., depending on the academic Department to which they were admitted; and
(ii) the peace and conflict resolution field with emphasis on conflict prevention, international cooperation and democracy building.
The core program of the Fellows’ studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution (P&CR) consists of 4 seminars (total 12 credits) in international mediation and cooperation; international development, conflict and cooperation; democracy and development; and a capstone seminar. One such seminar is scheduled per semester. The Rotary program is complemented by 4 optional mini-seminars offered at the Duke Center for International Development (DCID): an introductory seminar; one on peace making and implementation; one on indigenous peoples and human rights, and one on planning for conflict minimization.
In addition to attending the core Rotary seminars, the Fellows enrolled in the Duke Program in International Development Policy (PIDP), will focus their studies on the theme of sustainable development, including the promotion of economic growth with greater equity, improved governance and better stewardship of natural resources, the promotion of human rights, the design of sustainable institutions, and the use of processes that encourage cooperation. To that intent two mandatory seminars (total 6 credits) are required: one on policy analysis for development; and the other on economic analysis of development. Those with insufficient background in economics will also need to take a third seminar (3 credits) on the economic foundations of development.
For the remaining 30 (27) credits necessary to obtain their Master’s degree in International Development Policy, the Fellows are free to choose in consultation with their academic adviser, from among other seminars offered by the PIDP, others recommended under the P&CR specialization, or any others offered by Duke University and UNC, those that would best correspond to their career objectives and their ideals of service following the completion of the Rotary program.
