Katia Dantas de Mello, Brazil, District 4530

Duke

Program in International Development Policy

Katia Dantas gained first-hand experience in development through her work for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Brazil .  Katia worked with the USAID/Brazil health program during the course of several politically contentious disagreements between the U.S. and Brazilian governments. She played a key role in mitigating the negative political impact of this controversy, and has since assisted the USAID health team to resurrect the HIV/AIDS program after two years.  In her work with USAID, she has also been involved in the implementation of tuberculosis control and prevention activities in Brazil . Upon completion of the Rotary World Peace Program, Katia expects to apply her educational and professional experiences in working towards addressing Brazil 's social and health inequalities.
